The ESG TICKLER – Episode 21

Budget Time

Budget time how do we improve sustainability and stay within budget? This was the question for the team this time.

Thoughts turned to cleaning. Options discussed ranged from cleaning mysterious oil spills off the floor to creating great treats at lunchtime.

While it seemed worthwhile to invest in rinse and re-use towels, the issue remained what to do with the oil that may or may not be suds away? Or will an increase in the use of paper towels blow the limited budget?

The discussion then turned to the social clubs’ return on glass bottles, which led to more discussion about the reuse of empty containers.

Our Global Wind Day 2023

Global wind day focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, goal 7.

Goal 7 is not in our ESG report list, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find something to do that enables us to have easy access to clean affordable energy in the business.

What a challenge to work out!

This time for Global Wind Day 2023, after staring at Essy (the boat), a little idea popped into the conversation.

Instead of just sitting there with the solar panels charging her batteries, what could she do for the business as well as providing us with great downtime?

Thank you for your thoughts! Remember, lead covers are in place for a reason!

Our World Oceans Day

Thank you for reading this newsletter about our efforts to make a difference to world oceans day.

We love the ocean! Indeed it’s in our name! So as a small business, what can we do that would make a difference to the ocean?

Plenty of ideas abound, thank you for the full suggestion box!

Voila! The one to be implemented for 2023 is to change all our sunscreens for everyone!

When you go outside (you have seen Deb’s annual Efedex face!), all sunscreens in use in our business are to be ocean-safe sunscreen.

This type of sunscreen is very gentle on the reef and all who visit it. But when we wash our sunscreen off inside, it also goes down the water system, eventually finding its way out into our beautiful bay.

So instead of Porque no Los dos, let’s change to 100% ocean-safe sunscreen for all activity!

World Environment Day

Thanks for reading our newsletter for world environment day.

As a small but effective business, we can make changes that by themselves don’t seem much, or cost us much to implement.

Imagine if all the small businesses in the world changed one thing to reduce plastics in their business.

We all know plastics take forever to break down! Microplastics are in the ocean, being eaten by fish (and us). Given as the ocean efficiently breaks down the plastics into the smallest size that it can to make them useful for something down the track.

Our trash-to-treasure idea is to put all your disused, empty plastic pens in a specially marked bin near the shredder.

Then take them back to a stationery supplier who sends them off to a recycler. Our supplier does that.

Who knows, they could come back as a new pen!
